On UNESCO’s International Day of Education, 40 youth program participants from our Great Falls Teen Center (GFTC) and the Muslim Cultural Awareness Club at International High School had the incredible opportunity to visit the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan! This visit was more than just a field trip — it was an inspiring journey into the heart of global decision-making, diplomacy, and international collaboration.
Led by GFTC Program Director Adam Jawiech, our students explored the halls where world leaders gather to tackle some of the most pressing issues of our time. The experience of walking into the Security Council Chamber and seeing the beautiful artwork firsthand was truly awe-inspiring. The students were captivated by Norman Rockwell’s painting The Golden Rule, which beautifully embodies the UN’s mission of peace and unity. They also had the chance to see the UN Charter on display, learn about the organization’s rich history, and engage with an exhibit on Palestine that provided deeper insight into global affairs.
Reflecting on the experience, Adam shared, “It’s very exciting to have visited the UN along with multiple teachers from the Social Studies department and students deeply interested in geopolitics. The students were amazed with the ability to walk right into the rooms where some of the world’s biggest decisions are made. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and was great with the kids. We’ll definitely be coming back with a new group of kids so they get the same opportunity.”
For many of our students, the trip was eye-opening and sparked a new sense of possibility. Damla, one of our youth participants, was particularly fascinated by the translators working behind the scenes. “The trip was awesome, and it’s so cool how the members of the UN have a headphone that they hold up to their ear, and that there are translators for every language speaking into it. That would be a cool job to have.”
Omar, another attendee, left with a renewed ambition for the future. “I thought that people weren’t allowed to go into these spaces. Now I feel like working in the government and meeting at the UN isn’t impossible. I would like to be sitting here one day with the other representatives in my own chair.”
At NJCDC, we believe in providing young people with opportunities that broaden their horizons, ignite their passions, and encourage them to dream big. This visit to the United Nations was a powerful reminder that our students are the leaders of tomorrow, and with the right opportunities, they can truly change the world.
We can’t wait to return to the place where international magic happens with another group of future changemakers!
